Black Writer Asks: Is Drake Just Stupid?

Dear Drake,

Congratulations on signing a deal with Universal, but I’m not sure why you signed a deal with a label when you had the number 3 song on iTunes. You’re a talented guy who can write, sing, rap and have already had an acting career but I think you are starting things off on the wrong foot.

One thing I don’t understand is why you signed to Lil Wayne’s label. Lil Wayne is a prescription cough syrup-drinking, Blood gang-promoting, weapon-packing, pseudo gangsta rapper. While Wayne was brought up in one of the roughest projects in America and taken in by an ex con who brought him into the rap world, you were brought up in one of the nicest neighborhoods in Toronto, Canada by a wealthy Jewish woman and went to a prestigious private school. While Lil Wayne might have to use that tired “blame it on my environment excuse” to justify his violent and misogynist lyrics, you can’t say the same thing.

According to MTV News, 50 Cent refused to listen to the Game’s apology that he issued to him, Dr. Dre, Eminem and G-Unit.  We got two questions:  1) why is this n*gga apologizing to everybody? He musta done some f*cked up ish to get to piss everybody off, and 2) Why are rappers always beefin?  Can’t we all just…..get alongggg???

Hip Hop: Nas Gives Positive Statements on Drake

Posted in Uncategorized on July 7, 2009 by Staff

Controversy seems to naturally swirl around Nasir Jones.

Al Sharpton and the NAACP have condemned his albums. He’s had confrontations with some of hip-hop’s greatest, including Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Jay-Z and Def Jam. And lately his name is smeared across tabloids because his wife, “Milkshake” singer Kelis, is divorcing him.

Through it all, the New York City rapper known as Nas stays strong. He’s seen harder times.

He spoke to us about his music, the recession and his coming Wednesday performance with reggae star Damian Marley in the Stir Concert Cove at Harrah’s Casino in Council Bluffs.

Q. You’ve got a lot going on (touring, studio time, family drama, etc.). How do you stay focused?

Hip Hop: Dr Boyce Lays Down Economic Advice for Rappers

Posted in Uncategorized on July 1, 2009 by Staff

boycewpict

Hip-Hop Wired’s Michael “Ice-Blue” Harris recently sat down with scholar Dr. Boyce Watkins. The Syracuse University Financial Professor and advocate for African-Americans obtaining education and economic empowerment and warrior against racial injustice goes in on a few topics affecting Black America in the first of many insightful interviews.

HipHopWired: As far as Hip-Hop is concerned, you’ve been one of the people who….you’re part of the Hip-Hop generation, you speak to the Hip-Hop generation without criticizing but you do point out some of the things that are wrong. What are some of the changes you think we as men need to step up and do with the music?

Boyce Watkins: We need to stop being high paid hoes and learn how to be pimps. The truth is that…I actually wrote an article about this literally three days ago. Basically I created a hypothetical conversation between a rapper, a hypothetical rapper named Cash Money and the record label. Basically, Cash Money’s going to the executive and he’s saying, “Oh I know that my last album, Booties, Hoes and Bitches did real well on the charts but I’ve been thinking that this stuff’s not positive and I want to do something more positive next time, so I’m gonna do an album called Studying, Homework and Better Grades…” or something like that. I was just being silly so the executive is basically saying, “You know that’s a great idea Cash Money, I really feel ya dawg but the thing is that Booties, Hoes and Bitches sold two million copies last time and our projections show that the people who follow you, they want more booties, extra hoes and many more bitches so we’re thinking that that would be a great album title for your next release.

Black News: BET Awards Salute Michael Jackson

Posted in Uncategorized on June 29, 2009 by Staff

The star-studded BET Awards got under way without "the greatest star in the world," Joe Jackson, father of the late Michael Jackson, said on Sunday night.

Joe Jackson, father of Michael Jackson, was in attendance in Los Angeles for the BET Awards on Sunday.

Joe Jackson, father of Michael Jackson, was in attendance in Los Angeles for the BET Awards on Sunday.

"I wish the world had recognized him when he were living," Joe Jackson told CNN’s Don Lemon outside the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California.

"Right now he’s bigger than ever. But I wish he was here to see all this, to hear all this," Joe Jackson said.

When asked about circumstances surrounding his son’s death, he said, "I have a lot of concerns but I can’t get into that. … I don’t like what happened."

At the show, host Jamie Foxx came out in a red, leather "Billie Jean" jacket and capped his opening monologue with a crowd-pleasing but wobbly moonwalk.

Before the show, instead of asking celebrities what designer they wore, pre-awards show hosts Terrence J. and Rocsi asked about favorite Michael Jackson moments or songs.

" ‘Beat it’ and ‘Billie Jean,’ " recording artist Amerie gleefully said into the microphone, before rattling off several other hits.

Your Black News: White HBCU Homecoming Queen Takes Haters in Stride

Posted in Uncategorized on June 12, 2009 by Staff

by Dr Boyce Watkins

Kentucky State University is an HBCU which lies next to my heart. My sister, who just finished medical school, spent her undergraduate career there, so I was kept in the loop when the world seemed to flip on its head regarding who the students chose to hold the title of Miss Kentucky State University. As you can see, she’s not exactly what one would expect an HBCU Homecoming Queen to look like, but Elisabeth Martin’s skin color likely reflects one of the many faces that define Historically Black colleges in the new millennium. So, while I was personally dismayed that Kentucky State University (along with many HBCUs around the nation) seems to be forgetting about the importance of having African American faculty, the truth is that we are in an era in which one needs to determine what it means to be an HBCU.

Personally, I love the fact that the students at Kentucky State chose Elisabeth Martin as their homecoming queen. Martin, a 21-year old International Studies major, won the crown by a landslide, dominating the competition. It has been her race, however, that has sent shock waves through the Kentucky State University community. But Martin takes the heat in stride and carries herself with a grace and class that should make the campus proud. The fact that the students love her so much is verified by her love for the campus and commitment to school spirit. She has also handled the national media attention like a true queen should.

AOL Black Voices had the chance to catch up with Elisabeth Martin:

Your Black News: Jay Z Attacks Autotunes

Posted in Uncategorized on June 9, 2009 by Staff

Friday night saw the unveiling of another public service announcement from Jay-Z: "You rappers singing too much/ Get back to rap, you T-Pain-ing too much/ I’m a multi-millionaire/ So how am I the hardest n—a here?"

On New York’s Hot 97 radio station, Jay premiered a new song from his forthcoming Blueprint 3 LP called, "D.O.A.," or "The Death of Auto-Tune."

"This is anti-Auto-Tune, death of the Ringtone," Hov begins rapping over a track co-produced by Kanye West and No I.D. Hard drums and horns blaze as Jay conjures images of a black John Dillinger holding a smoking Tommy Gun, laying down a fool ignorant enough to stand in his way. Jay is back to kill biting MCs.

"This ain’t for iTunes, this ain’t for singalongs," he raps later in the song. "This is Sinatra at the opera, bring a blonde … My raps don’t have melodies/ It should make jackers commit felonies/ This ain’t a #1 record, this is practically assault with a deadly weapon."
