Dr Boyce Money: Nas in Serious Trouble with the IRS
Posted in hip hop, hip hop industry, hip hop music, rap with tags dr boyce watkins, nas, tax problems on October 20, 2009 by Staffby Dr. Boyce Watkins, AOL Black Voices
Hip Hop Wired is reporting that the rapper Nas is having some serious financial problems. In addition to owing his wife Kelis $44,000 per month in child support, it turns out that the artist also owes the federal government another $2.5 million in taxes. Here are quick thoughts about Nas, love and money:
1) Nas has a complicated life. His decision to marry the "love of his life" is going to cost him for the rest of his life. The rapper’s tax situation could be due to irresponsibility (as appears to be the case with Method Man and Nicolas Cage), or it could simply be a matter of using write-offs that were not allowed by the IRS. We can’t assume that Nas’ tax trouble automatically makes him into a horrible citizen.

So Andreas Hale, former Executive Editor of Music at BET.com, has been let go.
But instead of simply gathering up his pencils, Rolodex and the favorite coffee mug, Hale took to the web to lay out many of his trials and tribulations during his time at BET.
Hale then hit ’send’ on an explosive email that landed in our in-boxes Tuesday. The dysfunction that Hale describes is startling, but if we’re honest, I think Hale verifies what many of us have long suspected:
As someone who has been critical of BET for many years, it surprised many that I would leave my post at HipHopDX last year to take a position at BET. But it was an opportunity I absolutely had to take. I could no longer be critical of this company without accepting the opportunity to change it when given. …
Although I was hired to bring about change, I was systematically shut down. I wasn’t hired to make noise, I was hired to be silenced. The truth of the matter is that everything that you thought was wrong with BET is true.

Hip Hop Wired: Dr Boyce, Killer Mike Speak on Troy Davis’ Stay of Execution
Posted in hip hop, hip hop music, rap with tags hip hop, killer mike, troy davis on August 17, 2009 by StaffThe United States Supreme Court has granted Troy Davis‘ request to postpone his execution in yet another attempt to clear his name and prove his innocence.
Davis is an inmate that was sentenced to death after the 1989 murder of a Savannah, GA police officer. Since his incarceration, Davis has gained international support behind his claims of innocence.
Justice John Paul Stevens ordered a federal judge to "receive testimony and make findings of fact as to whether evidence that could not have been obtained at trial clearly establishes petitioner’s innocence."
Among the supporters of the motion were Justices Ruth Bader and Stephen Breyer. The newest member of the high court Sonia Sotomayor, however, did not participate in the petition. "Brother" Clarence Thomas did however and was one of two judges that dissented their reasons for not taking another look at the case and going ahead and killing Davis.
In the last year or so, Davis’ case has been quite turbulent, even being granted a stay of execution just two hours before he was to be put to death.
Despite the execution delay, Davis will continue to sit on death row, reports CNN.
Davis insists that he is innocent of the charges brought upon him in the murder of Officer Mark MacPhail. Witnesses claimed they saw Davis, then 19, and two other men harassing a homeless man in a Burger King parking lot when officer MacPhail arrived to the help the man. Witnesses identified Davis as the shooter claiming he shot MacPhail twice and fled on foot.
Since the 1991 conviction, however, seven of the nine witnesses have recanted their testimonies. In addition to the witnesses reneging, no physical evidence was ever presented to the trial jury or court.

“Nothing I ever say whether in music or DVD or whatever will ever get any one indicted or open any closed caskets or fuck up no appeals but this book is definitely gonna be a best seller and show Miami in a whole ‘nother light. "Cocaine Cowboys" was a good movie but it never showed the people who actually went out and sold the drugs. Niggas who toted and shot the guns. Parents who got addicted to the drugs and the babies born addicted to the drugs. Black News: Rapper Gets 2 Years in Prison for a Song About Killing Cops
Posted in Uncategorized on August 11, 2009 by StaffA Florida rapper is sentenced to two years in prison for a song called ‘Kill Me a Cop’ that he produced as a teenager.
Authorities say 20-year-old Antavio Johnson raps about killing two Lakeland, Fla., police officers in the tune, which cops found on MySpace while surfing for gang-related activity.
Johnson pleaded no contest to two counts ofcorruption by threat of a public servant and was sentenced to two years in prison last month. He was already in jail on a cocaine charge at the time. …
Singing about killing a cop was not Johnson’s first mistake. Pleading guilty and not hiring a lawyer were. Just ask Ice Cube and N.W.A., who sang ‘%#@* tha Police’ as a form of police protest more than 20 years ago.
Back in 1988, N.W.A had everyone from the FBI to the Secret Service breathing down its neck and lawsuits galore. If someone could have figured out a way to charge the group with a crime, lock ‘em up and throw away the key, I’m sure it would’ve happened.

Black News: Young Money Adds 10 Tour Dates
Posted in Uncategorized on August 7, 2009 by StaffGood news for all the rap fans clamoring to see one of the hottest hip-hop tours of the summer: The Lil Wayne-powered Young Money Presents: The America’s Most Wanted Music Festival has been extended, it was announced Wednesday (August 5), with 10 additional shows added to the bill.
The tour will now continue through September, ending with a stop in Sunrise, Florida, on September 6. Young Jeezy and Soulja Boy Tell’em are co-headlining the tour alongside Weezy, with support from Pleasure P, Jeremih and the Young Money crew, which includes Nicki Minaj.
The extension could be bittersweet news for Drake. The lyricist might be tempted to hop onstage for the extra dates despite his recent leg injury. The breakout star was one of the original headliners on the bill, but after suffering a knee injury, he was dropped down to a special-guest spot during Lil Wayne’s set. The Toronto MC joined his boss and company at the first two stops in Pennsylvania, but reinjured himself in Philadelphia. Video of his fall, which showed Drake writhing in pain, circulated online.

Black Writer Asks: Is Drake Just Stupid?
Posted in Uncategorized on July 10, 2009 by Staff
By Casey Gane-McCalla July 8, 2009 3:49 pm
Dear Drake,
Congratulations on signing a deal with Universal, but I’m not sure why you signed a deal with a label when you had the number 3 song on iTunes. You’re a talented guy who can write, sing, rap and have already had an acting career but I think you are starting things off on the wrong foot.
One thing I don’t understand is why you signed to Lil Wayne’s label. Lil Wayne is a prescription cough syrup-drinking, Blood gang-promoting, weapon-packing, pseudo gangsta rapper. While Wayne was brought up in one of the roughest projects in America and taken in by an ex con who brought him into the rap world, you were brought up in one of the nicest neighborhoods in Toronto, Canada by a wealthy Jewish woman and went to a prestigious private school. While Lil Wayne might have to use that tired “blame it on my environment excuse” to justify his violent and misogynist lyrics, you can’t say the same thing.

Posted in Uncategorized on July 1, 2009 by StaffHip-Hop Wired’s Michael “Ice-Blue” Harris recently sat down with scholar Dr. Boyce Watkins. The Syracuse University Financial Professor and advocate for African-Americans obtaining education and economic empowerment and warrior against racial injustice goes in on a few topics affecting Black America in the first of many insightful interviews.
HipHopWired: As far as Hip-Hop is concerned, you’ve been one of the people who….you’re part of the Hip-Hop generation, you speak to the Hip-Hop generation without criticizing but you do point out some of the things that are wrong. What are some of the changes you think we as men need to step up and do with the music?
Boyce Watkins: We need to stop being high paid hoes and learn how to be pimps. The truth is that…I actually wrote an article about this literally three days ago. Basically I created a hypothetical conversation between a rapper, a hypothetical rapper named Cash Money and the record label. Basically, Cash Money’s going to the executive and he’s saying, “Oh I know that my last album, Booties, Hoes and Bitches did real well on the charts but I’ve been thinking that this stuff’s not positive and I want to do something more positive next time, so I’m gonna do an album called Studying, Homework and Better Grades…” or something like that. I was just being silly so the executive is basically saying, “You know that’s a great idea Cash Money, I really feel ya dawg but the thing is that Booties, Hoes and Bitches sold two million copies last time and our projections show that the people who follow you, they want more booties, extra hoes and many more bitches so we’re thinking that that would be a great album title for your next release.

Black News: BET Awards Salute Michael Jackson
Posted in Uncategorized on June 29, 2009 by StaffThe star-studded BET Awards got under way without "the greatest star in the world," Joe Jackson, father of the late Michael Jackson, said on Sunday night.
Joe Jackson, father of Michael Jackson, was in attendance in Los Angeles for the BET Awards on Sunday.
"I wish the world had recognized him when he were living," Joe Jackson told CNN’s Don Lemon outside the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California.
"Right now he’s bigger than ever. But I wish he was here to see all this, to hear all this," Joe Jackson said.
When asked about circumstances surrounding his son’s death, he said, "I have a lot of concerns but I can’t get into that. … I don’t like what happened."
At the show, host Jamie Foxx came out in a red, leather "Billie Jean" jacket and capped his opening monologue with a crowd-pleasing but wobbly moonwalk.
Before the show, instead of asking celebrities what designer they wore, pre-awards show hosts Terrence J. and Rocsi asked about favorite Michael Jackson moments or songs.
" ‘Beat it’ and ‘Billie Jean,’ " recording artist Amerie gleefully said into the microphone, before rattling off several other hits.

Your Black News: White HBCU Homecoming Queen Takes Haters in Stride
Posted in Uncategorized on June 12, 2009 by Staff
by Dr Boyce Watkins
Kentucky State University is an HBCU which lies next to my heart. My sister, who just finished medical school, spent her undergraduate career there, so I was kept in the loop when the world seemed to flip on its head regarding who the students chose to hold the title of Miss Kentucky State University. As you can see, she’s not exactly what one would expect an HBCU Homecoming Queen to look like, but Elisabeth Martin’s skin color likely reflects one of the many faces that define Historically Black colleges in the new millennium. So, while I was personally dismayed that Kentucky State University (along with many HBCUs around the nation) seems to be forgetting about the importance of having African American faculty, the truth is that we are in an era in which one needs to determine what it means to be an HBCU.
Personally, I love the fact that the students at Kentucky State chose Elisabeth Martin as their homecoming queen. Martin, a 21-year old International Studies major, won the crown by a landslide, dominating the competition. It has been her race, however, that has sent shock waves through the Kentucky State University community. But Martin takes the heat in stride and carries herself with a grace and class that should make the campus proud. The fact that the students love her so much is verified by her love for the campus and commitment to school spirit. She has also handled the national media attention like a true queen should.
AOL Black Voices had the chance to catch up with Elisabeth Martin:

Jamie Foxx Might be in trouuuuuble!
The 41-year-old’s foul outburst was prompted by a caller to the show who brought up a month-old story in which Cyrus pledged to “ruin” Radiohead after the rockers rejected a request to meet with the Disney star backstage at the Grammys.
“Who is Miley Cyrus?” an incredulous Foxx, who has a teenage daughter of his own, said. “The one with all the gums? She gotta get a gum transplant…S–t.”
The insults didn’t stop there. Or get less personal.
“She’s gonna ruin Radiohead’s career? The same Radiohead that gets paid a million dollars just to sample their songs?
“Make a sex tape and grow up,” he continued. “Get like Britney Spears and do some heroin. Do like Lindsay Lohan and start seeing a lesbian and get some crack in your pipe. Catch chlamydia on a bicycle seat.
“That’s what I want.” E Online
Miley’s dad, Billy Ray, is particularly upset, according to the source.
“He thinks Jamie was out of line and didn’t find any humor in it,” the source told me this afternoon. “He doesn’t understand why he would do that to Miley, especially since he has teenage daughter himself.” E Online
Foxx noted to Jay Leno that he was doing a routine, saying: “Sometimes as comedians, you know, we go a little too far.”

It’s about Damn Time: Fewer Brothers Going to Prison for Drugs
Posted in Uncategorized on April 16, 2009 by StaffFor the first time since the war on drugs became a national law enforcement obsession in the mid-1980s, the number of African-Americans in state prisons for drug offenses has declined, a criminal justice reform organization said.

The number of whites in state prison for drugs rose 42.6 percent since 1999, while blacks dropped 21.6 percent.
A study released Tuesday by the Sentencing Project found a 21.6 percent drop in the number of blacks incarcerated for drug offenses, a decline of 31,000 people, from 1999 to 2005.
The corresponding number of whites in state prisons for drug offenses rose 42.6 percent, or by more than 21,000 people, while the number of Hispanics was virtually unchanged, according to "The Changing Racial Dynamics of the War on Drugs."
The study, authored by Executive Director Marc Mauer, found that the differences between black and white imprisonments for drug crimes are partly because of how police target suspects and court sentencing guidelines, which vary by state.
Also, there has been a decrease in the use of crack cocaine in predominantly minority urban neighborhoods and an increase in methamphetamine abuse in many primarily white rural areas, Mauer said Wednesday.

Lil Wayne never would have made it had it not been for big Robert Hoobler.
AP PHOTONew Orleans native rapper Lil Wayne.
The celebrated New Orleans rapper would have bled to death on the floor of his mother’s Hollygrove apartment the afternoon of Nov. 11, 1994, at just 12 years old, after accidentally shooting himself in the chest while playing with a 9 mm handgun.
If not for Hoobler, the New Orleans police officer who cradled the bleeding boy in the back of a squad car that day on the way to the hospital, the Grammy-winning superstar would never have made the cover of the current issue of Rolling Stone.
The shooting, part of the Lil Wayne lore, has been chronicled before, but not its details, nor the tale of the man who saved his life: a 6-foot, 7-inch, 330-pound officer who responded to the shooting while off-duty, as was his habit.
Remember the Bald Chick? More Pictures

We talked about Cassie’s craziness earlier, but you just can’t get enough of her bald look. On one hand, half of her still looks cute. On the other hand, you just want to find her a nice half a weave and strap it onto her face. I’ll let you decide.

Bow Wow Rappin About Sunshine
Posted in Uncategorized on April 12, 2009 by StaffI’m not feeling Bow Wow’s Sunshine, but I’ll let you judge for yourself. He seems to be coming off like a shorter, younger, less talented and broker version of TI (remember that song “You can have it all”? Don’t that sound like “You can have whatever you like?”). Also, the video seems a bit on the low budget side, since Bow Wow shoots the whole damn video from his trailer (WTF?).
But don’t let me hate on it, check it out for yourself. Click the image to watch the video.
Remember MC Eiht? This Groupie Does
Posted in Uncategorized on April 12, 2009 by Staff
Remember MC Eiht? He’s the dude from Compton’s Most Wanted who also starred in the movie Menace 2 Society about 100 years ago. Well, apparently his girlfriend is putting him on blast for not being able to get it up during sex. Here is what she had to say:
“[MC] Eiht has a problem. With his penis – it doesn’t work. He can’t get it up for some reason.
He said it’s because he f*cked so many b*tches back in the day, when he really had it going on. You know how n*ggas got it going on, they got all this money, they rappers, they f*ck 2 and three b*tches a day.
Well apparently that makes your d*ck stop working, ‘cause that’s what happened to [MC] Eiht.”
But then again, maybe she is putting it on him that she can’t get him excited enough to want to do it! Anyway, if you want to find out why people used to pay attention to this dude back in the day, click on the link below to watch one of his videos.
OK, please Stop: Rick Ross Gets a Prank Call About 50 Cent
Posted in Uncategorized on April 11, 2009 by Staff
The beef between 50 Cent and Rick Ross has gotten a bit more interesting, but this time the G-Unit leader is not the one firing shots.
Ross revealed in a video interview with TorchisNy.com that Nelson Gomez, a man claiming to be a G-Unit employee, contacted him and offered him a lump sum to end his rap beef with 50 Cent.
“Nelson Gomez offered me a sum of money to fall back,” Ross claims in the video. “I told him, “Make it a half a million and I’ll chill on Curly [50 Cent]. But that don’t go for Yayo and the other guy. I’mma still see them. Ya’ll got to pay separate.’”
Lil Kim Running for Mayor is a Hoax
Posted in Uncategorized on April 11, 2009 by Staff
Sorry, folks: rapper Lil’ Kim is not running for mayor of Hoboken.
Some New York media outlets, including Channel 7 Eyewitness News and 1010 WINS, reported the rumor Friday after a man claiming to be the rapper’s publicist circulated a bogus press release.
"She is NOT running for mayor of Hoboken," Lil’ Kim’s actual publicist, Lisa Perkins, told the Daily News.
Perkins said the individual behind the hoax "has no association with Kim" and was "committing fraud."
Lil’ Kim, 33, is in Los Angeles rehearsing for ABC’s "Dancing With The Stars." She’s been a breakout hit on the show, earning praise for her "bionic booty."

Hip Hop News: Kanye West Appears on South Park
Posted in Uncategorized on April 10, 2009 by Staff
Kanye West appeared on the cartoon “Southpark”. Here is what he had to say:
“SOUTH PARK MURDERED ME LAST NIGHT AND IT’S PRETTY FUNNY. IT HURTS MY FEELINGS BUT WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM SOUTH PARK! I ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN WORKING ON MY EGO THOUGH. HAVING THE CRAZY EGO IS PLAYED OUT AT THIS POINT IN MY LIFE AND CAREER. I USE TO USE IT TO BUILD UP MY ESTEEM WHEN NOBODY BELIEVED IN ME. NOW THAT PEOPLE DO BELIEVE AND SUPPORT MY MUSIC AND PRODUCTS THE BEST RESPONSE IS THANK YOU INSTEAD OF “I TOLD YOU SO!!!” IT’S COOL TO TALK SHIT WHEN YOU’RE RAPPING BUT NOT IN REAL LIFE. WHEN YOU MEET LITTLE WAYNE IN PERSON HE’S THE NICEST GUY FOR EXAMPLE. I JUST WANNA BE A DOPER PERSON WHICH STARTS WITH ME NOT ALWAYS TELLING PEOPLE HOW DOPE I THINK I AM. I NEED TO JUST GET PAST MYSELF. DROP THE BRAVADO AND JUST MAKE DOPE PRODUCT. EVERYTHING IS NOT THAT SERIOUS. AS LONG AS PEOPLE THINK I ACT LIKE A BITCH THIS TYPE OF SHIT WILL HAPPEN TO ME. I GOT A LONG ROAD AHEAD OF ME TO MAKE PEOPLE BELIEVE I’M NOT ACTUALLY A HUGE DOUCHE BUT I’M UP FOR THE CHALLENGE. I’M SURE THE WRITERS AT SOUTH PARK ARE REALLY NICE PEOPLE IN REAL LIFE. THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO DRAW MY CREW. THAT WAS PRETTY FUNNY ALSO!! I’M SURE THERE’S GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN THIS… THAT’S HOW YOU KNOW IT’S ME!”
