Black News: BET Awards Salute Michael Jackson

The star-studded BET Awards got under way without "the greatest star in the world," Joe Jackson, father of the late Michael Jackson, said on Sunday night.

Joe Jackson, father of Michael Jackson, was in attendance in Los Angeles for the BET Awards on Sunday.

Joe Jackson, father of Michael Jackson, was in attendance in Los Angeles for the BET Awards on Sunday.

"I wish the world had recognized him when he were living," Joe Jackson told CNN’s Don Lemon outside the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California.

"Right now he’s bigger than ever. But I wish he was here to see all this, to hear all this," Joe Jackson said.

When asked about circumstances surrounding his son’s death, he said, "I have a lot of concerns but I can’t get into that. … I don’t like what happened."

At the show, host Jamie Foxx came out in a red, leather "Billie Jean" jacket and capped his opening monologue with a crowd-pleasing but wobbly moonwalk.

Before the show, instead of asking celebrities what designer they wore, pre-awards show hosts Terrence J. and Rocsi asked about favorite Michael Jackson moments or songs.

" ‘Beat it’ and ‘Billie Jean,’ " recording artist Amerie gleefully said into the microphone, before rattling off several other hits.

How could Joe Jackson go on a memorial tribute show for MJ and talk about his personal record project. His behavior only gives more validity to MJ’s accusations. He did not even fake grief and seemed not to give a damn. He is riding the coattails of MJ’s death. How despicable.

I try to give this brother an out because his son just died. But he really needs to just stop talking. He really does ! It seems that when he gives a press conference or wants to say something he is always alone.

That is an indication to me that the rest of family is still grieving and they are not really trying feel is what he trying to say. I think this is his way of grieving but he really needs to chill !

this show was a COLOSSAL failure…..i CANNOT believe that this garbage tried to pass itself of as a tribute to the greatest entertainer that ever lived!!!! soulja boy performing…turn my swag on??? BET, you should be ashamed of yourselves for this. this show was full of young, ingnorant, egocentric entertainers that couldn’t go one evening without performing one of their songs. i tuned in to hear michael’s music…not theirs. thank you ciara, new edition and neyo…for putting yourselves on the back burner to honor the king of pop. my sincerest apologies to the jackson family for tortuting you with 3 and a half hours of pure coonery and lack of showmanship. ONLY 4 SONGS IN THE WHOLE EVENING TO HONOR MJ??? I AM CANCELLING MY BET TOMORROW…UTTERLY FLABERGASTED!!!furthermore, this was a night for BET to shine. people around the world, who’d never heard of BET tuned in tonite to see how MJ’s own people would honor him, and this is what they saw…..this was truly embarassing

I Wish BET Died and MJ did a tribute t them… iI am soo disappointed in BET for not seizing the moment to actually celebrate MJ’s life as an artist..instead they sunk to new lows and put on an atrocious mess that lacked continuity and can you NOT have a Tribute wiithout Thriller?..Or have a medley of We are the World..Ughh. I am going to bed coz this is not good for my bllod pressure lol..Gnite BET,I hope by the time I wake up BET will no longer exist!…Would it have been a cumbersome task to get a bunch of artists from Diverse Background to sing a medley of We are the World, Heal the world, get the Woman beater to perform Billie Jean, Usher to perform Rocking robin , Justin Timberlake to perform sth….and delete Beyonce from the show….Oh and how can you have a TRIBUTe without THRILLER…

I understand the timing of MJ’s death was tragic in itself adding tributes in such a short time frame about the pop star was great and we will miss him, however, what was already headlined was a MESS!! This award show was the worse one I’ve seen yet! I’m sorry, but I have a problem with the song “I want to “F” every girl in the world”. HOW DOES THIS SONG EVEN GET RADIO AIR PLAY…LET ALONE BE PERFORMED ON A SHOW OF THIS SUPOSSEDLY SAFISTICATED MAGNITUDE??

You got to be kidding me…I am not hattin – I support Lil’ Wayne and the young brotha gettin their hustle on, but WOW!, there’s a time and a place for everything, and this is not the type of venue for that type of song, period!! Compared to MJ, this is a perfect example of creativity or “lack there of” that makes this industry now in deep trouble!

If the extent of today’s artist regarding creativity is that you want screw all the women in the world…. you got about 10 more minutes left on that 20 minute career. That’s my two cents… I know I’ll probably going to get some flack because I used Lil’ Wayne as an example, but again… “DAMN”. What’s the other one…uuhhhmm, oh yeah, “I’m in love with a stripper!!” This is the #$%@ that’s being put out as music!! WOW

Well I for one thought the BET Awards Show was a bust. I think they would have done a better job if they would have waited and did a true tribute. And what the hell was Joe Jackson doing there????? His comments to CNN were not only inappropriate…but also self serving. He introduced his laywer…then brought up his buisness partner and announced his record company as his sons dead body lies in a moruge. He certainly proved all the rumors to be true…what an asshole! In closing, the best performance and the best thing for me was the sexy, outstanding, and talented Maxwell. Now that was a performance!! He still got it!!!

I am totally ashamed of BET and very disgusted…this is the worst example of BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TV I have ever seen~ I will never again watch another program on BET (Bootleg Entertainment TV)

Not only were some of the performances disrepsectful and offensive, but the over all show was a disgrace. I for one tuned in to see the tribute to Michael Jackson and to see most of the PERFORMERS don’t even have a clue about entertaining. Running all over the stage referring to women as b’s and hoes and the disgusting sexual content/nature~ and one of the saddest parts~ to see young BLACK females in the audience singing the lyrics to this offensive NOISE!

Imagine what would happen if people (mainly BLACK) gained SELF-respect and stopped buying this crap…then the entertainers would be forced to clean up their acts! Then we could go back to enjoying music like Michael Jackson is best known for (ENTERTAINMENT)

Barrack Obama took us some what from being viewed as ‘ghetto, ignorant, thugs’ and BET took us right back there last night

Rest in Peace Michael Jackson and our prayers and blessings to the entire Jackson Family!

I have to agree with everything that is being said here. Joe Jackson….what kind of father are you? He certainly made that obvious to the world. He should have been home with his family mourning the death of his SON. Bloody gold-digger. I purchased BET channel specifically to watch this show and what a waste of money that was. My high school could have produced a more professional show.

Let’s just hope that Joe and his wife don’t get custody of the children. Joe will find a way to cash in on them as well.

God bless you MJ. And thank you for sharing your gift of music with the world.

Nobody ain’t trying to hear Joe! He is just giving statements to get attention. The wife has been separated from him since I dont know when and he really is just a figure head at this point the lawyers, and the executors make the decisions about his estate We will see what MJ final will and testiment says

And oh by the way…what the hell was Beyonce thinking…with her porn version of Ava Maria (I guess that’s the name of it) whatever it was she shouldn’t have.

Jamie Fox shame on you for announcing your tour date over and over…was this tribute to Michael Jackson or you. And why were you running around like you were on crack. I feel that you are very, very talented but your actions last night were just wrong. Get it together.
Lil Wayne and his crew with all of the profanity and the little tween girls on stage as you talk about your d—k come on people. BET shame on you. You have to know better. You have just earned one less fan.

The show was a Hot Ghetto Mess! Shame on you BET! Fighting on stage, cussing, 8 year old girls shake dancing as Lil Wayne talks about screwing Miley Cyrus. Shameful all around. Maxwell, Alicia and Wyclef had class.

I have to agree with the fact that the BET awards was a mess. And… they barely get brownie points from me for trying after MJ’s untimely passing and with the behind the scenes drama of the entertainment world, they had to make do. However, to put together a tribute for the main man that represented us as succesful black entertainers, they should have taken much more time and money to make sure that Michael was represented properly. Im sure we black folks could have waited another week or more to see something better than what we saw. BET should have represented Michael Jackson the strongest STRICTLY for what the network is… Black Entertainment Television. Michael was too good for all that damn bufoonery. Soulja Boy, Lil Wayne, T Pain in-the-ass got on my nerves and gave me a migraine with all that damn noise. I understand it was an awards show and all these other artists worked hard; and yes it was a night for them also. But this was a time for them to put their egos in they back pocket and give much love and representation to the one who helped pave the way for the careers more than HALF of them non-singing, wack rappin, broke asses dont even deserve. They should have been the main ones moonwalkin and singing every damn song Michael ever recorded if they was going to be on stage performing at all that night. I say to BET, If I even so much hear any one of yall sayin that us as black people need to do better, I will paste my ass to my TV screen just so your network can kiss it. Because that was some unutterly bullshit.

No pun intended on the ones who showed love for Michael. As for the performers who gave it their all FOR MICHAEL U have my respect. Congrats to the O’Jays, in spite of it all. Tyrese, U showed yo ass that night if you neva sing again, U sang that night! BET, get it together.
